SPIRE – why will ambulances enter Emergency from a residential street?

The next WVCC public meeting will be held at 7pm on Wednesday 6 November 2019 at the Woden Southern Cross Club. Minister Stephen–Smith will discuss the SPIRE project and staff from Major Projects Canberra will be on hand to advise the community about the policy changes for the development of the Canberra Hospital.

While the WVCC supports the development of the SPIRE building and the Canberra Hospital, we acknowledge the following concerns raised by the community:

·         safety of the community (especially children) due to the ambulance entry moving from Yamba Drive to Palmer Street, a residential street opposite the Garran Primary School

·         traffic congestion on Kitchener St, Gilmore Cres and Palmer St which is the main entrance to Garran and Hughes from Hindmarsh Drive. There is a lack of traffic modelling to understand the impacts of traffic flows on residents

·         parking due to a lack of land use planning on the site to identify parking areas

·         noise from the helicopter pad (on the 9 storey SPIRE) on residents and the school children.

Before the existing buildings at the hospital and the CIT are demolished it is imperative to strategically plan the ongoing development of the Canberra Hospital to ensure the best use of land for health outcomes and to minimise the impacts on surrounding residents.

ACT Health will also tell us about the Centenary hospital expansion project.

ACT Libraries will chat about the workshops they will hold to hear your views about how $500,000 can be spent to create a new community space on the top level, where the Heritage Library used to be.
